  • My friend, Howard Council, (1926-2014) was one of the most influential and copied roping saddle makers. More importantly, he was a nice guy who loved saddle making more than anyone else I ever met. He's shown here the night he won the Chester A. Reynolds Memorial Award at the Western Heritage Awards at The Cowboy Hall of Fame on Saturday night, April 16, 2011. He was only the third saddle maker to win it, and it is a testament to the great saddles he's been building since 1950. He was in the company of movie stars and celebrities that night, but he was the happiest with all of the cowboys who ride his saddles that showed up to honor him, including Roy Cooper.
